Pit-Fired Ceramics Workshop Led by Tanya Lee

Pit firing is one of the oldest methods of firing ceramics, dating back thousands of years. Instead of using a kiln, clay vessels are placed in a pit dug into the ground and surrounded by combustible materials such as grasses, leaves, or even organic matter like banana peels. As the fire burns slowly, smoke, ash, and minerals from the natural materials interact with the clay, leaving unique patterns, colours, and markings on each piece. Because no glazes are used, the surface designs come entirely from this process of fire and country working together.
